That London

Early train down to that London and a late train back sandwiched a day conference where I’ve picked up a new and interesting piece of work which should keep me out of trouble for a few years.

After that finished I had a couple of hours to squander – I’m sure every time I go to London it’s busier. I walked to Somerset House and managed to catch the Sony World Photography Awards which finished this weekend. It’s probably too late to recommend it, but the wide range of styles made it most engaging. As in my novel reading I tend to be drawn to bleaker stories in photography. Sarah Lewkowicz had a series that elicted a visceral reaction both individually but more as the story unfolded across half a dozen photos depicting the shame and psychological fracturing of domestic violence. A special display by Mary Ellen Mark was worth the entry fee alone.

Too tired to let that all inspire me, despite considerable inspiration in a stimulating day. So todays blip is the contrasting, soaring lines in St Pancras – which has to be one of my faviourite buildings in this amazing, sometimes exasperating but as ever captivating city.
