Today's action: It will happen again
Here's another location where accidents happen quite often. The last one was only six days ago and today, around noon, again two cars collided on this intersection. There are no traffic lights, but the view at oncoming traffic is wide and open. Then why does this happen here so often?
It must have something to do with judging speed, I think. Making a left turn drivers must yield and let oncoming traffic pass first, as that traffic has the right of way. In at least some of the incidents drivers probably think they can cross in front of the oncoming traffic, misjudging their speed and causing the accident. It's almost impossible to not see the traffic coming, as there's nothing blocking the view.
In this case one of the cars turned 180 degrees after the collision and rolled on it's side. Reason for the emergency services to respond with many. Police needed to close the roads to create a safe working space. And as this is an intersection of two main roads this required at least three police units. Then more police was at the scene to question witnesses and investigate the cause of the accident. Two ambulances responded to care for the injured. And because one car was on it's side the fire department was needed to stabilize that car and help free the casualty that was trapped inside. All this means that, due to one person making a mistake in judgement, most of our available emergency services in the city are being called in to deal with the results. And a main road is closed for a considerable time, causing delays and detours.
But worst of all, seemingly not knowing why this happens here so often is quite frustrating. If speed is a factor, changes need to be made to protect the public using this road. But as long as nothing is done to change this intersection and make it safer, it will happen again.
