Socialism ain't what it used to be. This demonstration in Trafalgar Square was a bit of a limp affair compared with the stuff we used to get in the 70s. The demonstration was protesting about conditions in Turkish mines after this week's disaster.

"Workers united, will never be divided," they chanted. Too late, I fear. I used to be part of the union, a shop steward (or father-of-the-chapel as we called it in newspapers) and, it was true, in those days we didn't get pushed around. Today we've been bought out by employee-of-the-month and attaboy award certificates.
