Longstreet
Commanding the 1st Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, James Longstreet played a pivotal role in the battle for Gettysburg. On July 1-3, 1863, two large armies came together here. Gen Robert E. Lee went away disappointed after he ordered Longstreet to conduct an operation against the Union positions on Cemetery Ridge during the third day...now known as "Pickett's Charge." This is Longstreet's monument and rests near the point where that decision was made.
