Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

A famous Peterhead loon*.

The old harbour town of Peterhead boasts some fine buildings built in the local red granite. One of the most striking is the old Town House which dates from 1788.

The statue sitting in front of the Town House is that of Field Marshal James Keith which was presented to the town in 1868, by King William I of Prussia. James Keith was born in Peterhead in 1696, the younger son of the 9th Earl Marischal. Finding himself on the losing side of the 1715 Jacobite uprising, James fled the country. He went on to become a Field Marshal in the Prussian army and was much involved in the Seven Years War (1756-1763) which involved Prussia, Britain, and Hanover having a ding-dong with Austria, France and Russia. Keith was eventually killed fighting for the Prussians against the Austrians at the Battle of Hochkirchen in Saxony on 14 October 1758. The battle ended in Victory for the Austrians.
