Water

The Lonely Planet describes North Uist as ‘an island half-drowned by lochs’ and that is just what it is. It also has a lot of coast, heavily indented with inlets, islands and islets. So water, water everywhere.

I’m not sure whether there is more water than land, but at times it can certainly feel that way. As you walk along the tracks or drive along the roads, you find yourself more often than not walking or driving alongside water, whether it is sea or a loch. There are causeways joining bits of land and it can be quite unnerving sometimes to suddenly find water on both sides of the single track road and very little between you and the water.

This picture gives an idea of what the landscape is like through much of the island. Needs to be seen large I think.

And of course you will instantly realise that our sun and blue skies have disappeared; we now have misty white skies and damp, drizzly weather.

And here is yet another white sandy beach at Bale Sear, but not so inviting in this weather.
