At Home: Little life
Another call duck battles its way into the world. Its a wobbly start. I wouldn't normally intervene but this one pipped the egg at the wrong end. In starting to open his way out the egg in this way means he immediately narrowed down his chances of arriving into this world alive.
Its always a good thing to let a chick have a fighting chance of unzipping and opening. Its easy to jump in a help in a panic. They say that its the fighting that the chick goes through at this stage, helps it become strong enough for when its hatched. Its flexing those bandy bones, flexing them into shape.
This chick, rolled up tight into a small egg shape ball. Every push out of the shell, stretched its head straight, a leg lengthens. Its also spending time still absorbing the rest of the yolk. It won't need to eat for a day or so.
The good news is, thats it has another friend already eagerly awaiting its arrival. By this time tomorrow, the older one will have taught this one to eat and drink.
Clever calls, amazing little lives......
