River Don
Venerable Bede described the banks of the River Don as being 'heavily wooded and home to bears and wolves'. Now the river is no more than a stream due to an underground reservoir at its source and the banks are home to electricity pylons, dog walkers and joggers. It still remembers the monks who paddled their coracles on the journey from Jarrow to Wearmouth as the path is known as Bede's Way.
