Aperture on Life

Potter wasp

I've almost back blipped the past week. Not a comment on the photos as it's late. Extras in the house, add lambs and the garden which is getting every moment of my spare time to get it back in order, the past week has been a blur of activity.

This is a Potter Wasp that was perching on my Choisya. They're just over 10 mm long. They make little clay cups like an ancient Greek ampora, which give them their familiar name. The Latin is a mouthful, Ancistrocerus paretium. The little cups are filled with caterpillars and an egg then sealed. The larvae feast on the caterpillars until it's time to break out of the structures as adults. Fascinating little creatures and it's a shame I didn't find this one building a nest.
