Progress Report
Back to North Tyneside General today to meet the surgeon & check how the knee is progressing.
On the way up a crash meant a detour - so instead of whizzing by the Angel of the North on the A1 as usual - this time I found myself right under it - and a large free car park, plus time to spare - meant that it was time to stop. Its now 18 years since Gormley's iconic statement peice was erected - and if I'm deeply honest I've always felt a little underwhelmed when I've sped past. I think the location hasn't helped - the first sight of it from the South is marred by pylons - and the bend and dip of the motorway leave little time to let its effects sink in. But, and its a big but, its so so so worth stopping to admire up close. The site is a mess - but the statue is amazing - up close it is so much larger and more vibrant - the details of the rusted iron work and immense scale of the form- I thought it would be a quick hop out of the car for a Blip - but it demands much more - in the end I had to get a move on to get to the hospital on time.
It's strange how you get given a lot more information AFTER the operation isn't it! - having been told that I'd be back at work after six weeks the surgeon now tells me that it could well be another six weeks (totalling fourteen) till the knee can take really stressful loads. A simple operation it now seems will still be painful for three to six months as there's a lot of nerves to cut through (ugh!), and yes - keep taking hourly anti-inflammatory's. Oh & no - we don't offer any rehab programs as you're already too fit! Hmmph - this had better be worth it in the long run.
