On a mission
L was on a mission today. Headstrong and determined, she suggested walking a 10-12 mile there and back cliff walk to Cayton Bay and back.
The forecast was much the same as yesterday but it was warmer and there was less of a breeze.
Last week, when Rich and I walked to Runswick Bay, the blurb told us it was the best part of the Cleveland Way. It was pleasant but there were no particular views of the cliffs nor inland and we weren't fussed about walking back. Walking both ways today didn't excite me much but I knew it was part of L's determination to get back on track so no buses today!
Luckily, today's walk was much more dramatic with interesting views in every direction. It was a pleasure to reverse the route.
On the way, we saw seals playing on the rocky shores below and kittiwakes soaring and nesting in the cliffs. After saying I never see caterpillars, it was a hairy caterpillar fest and we played dodge the crawlers most of the way. Looking at the ID guides, I think most were drinker moth caterpillars but one was a garden tiger moth caterpillar (or the ‘Woolly Bear’ caterpillar because of its long hairs.) Now I've looked these up, I'm becoming rather fascinated by moths.
Both a little tired by the time we got back, we sauntered along the promenade in Filey, collecting an ice cream on the way and enjoying a cuppa before heading home. As we pulled out of our car parking space, the heavens opened and the thunder began. Satisfaction!
