Spot the Dragon
I visited Sutton Hoo this afternoon, not to see the exhibitions, just to go on one of the walks they have around their 245 acre (99 hectare) site.
Unfortunately the bluebells are past their best, but as I walked through the wood I noticed Spot the Dragon. I think who's ever imagination to turn this fallen down tree into a dragon should be patted on the back, it's wonderful. Some children who were there thought so too as they all ran up to him talking excitedly. I rewarded myself a cup of Earl Grey and slice of carrot cake when I'd crossed the finishing line
Sutton Hoo is owned by the National Trust, but was once owned by Edith Pretty, who had a vision that the huge earth mounds on her land held treasures. In 1939 she hired Basil Brown, an archaeologist, to excavate one of the mounds and the incredible ship burial of an Anglo Saxon warrior king, including the iconic Sutton Hoo helmet, weapons and priceless royal treasures were revealed. The originals are all in the British Museum and replicas are on display. When I had more time to spare I used to volunteer there, but now I just go to visit, perhaps one day!
