Ancient woodland

This is Gamlingay Wood, one of several ancient woods near our house. It is managed by The Wildlife Trust. The wood is mentioned in the Domesday Book and appears to have been woodland for 1000 years.

Now the trust is clearing a number of areas like the one above in order to allow more light which will encourage greater flora growth and bird/insect life. The notices around the wood apologise for how destructive it all looks but explain how quickly new growth and life will appear.

In the meantime Jack and I enjoyed a good walk - sad to see the bluebells fading for another year.
