Oyama magnolia

Today, I’ve chosen another tree flower, this the romantic and subtle Magnolia sieboldii. These fragrant four inch cuplike flowers demurely look down after emerging from their fuzzy buds. As a small multi-trunked tree used to growing as an understory plant, it is happy growing in partial shade (in fact leaves will burn if there is too much sun). It likes moisture, but no standing water. In the fall, the leaves turn yellow before falling and the fruit cones are a rosy red, highlighted against a smooth grey bark. It is also, surprisingly hardy....as far north as Finland!
