Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Red and green.

There is an old English saying that goes something like this:

Red and green should ne'er be seen, except on a fool's back.

This presumably refers to the colours worn by the jesters, or fools, kept for the entertainment of the upper crust in times long gone.

Thus with consummate cruelty the grammar school that I attended opted for a uniform of red and green. A red and green striped blazer, a red and green striped peaked cap, a red and green striped woollen scarf and knee length grey socks topped, of course, with red and green stripes. Oh, what derision was heaped upon us by the kids from the other place as we walked home at night. They certainly knew how to toughen you up in post-war Yorkshire!

Despite such trauma, I can never resist taking photographs of red poppies as they burst forth.
