I highly recommend The Book Thief.

The story comes from the perspective of Death, as he observes the life of a young German girl living in Nazi Germany. The girl, who loves books, helps to hide a Jew in her basement, befriends a boy who is obsessed with Jesse Owens, and is cared for by her accordion-playing papa and loud-mouthed mama. The characters are marvelous, the writing is beautiful, and the story is very heartfelt.
