Funfair lad
Funfairs, this is Hereford May Fair, those events which bombard the senses with noise, light, smell, and taste (usually sickly sweet). They take you into a different world, spin you around, physically if you dare, and are quite hard work if, like me, you prefer peace and quiet. The kids love it, eyes wide, eager, though even they are wary of some rides, and tire quite quickly from the aural and visual storm.
The staff on the rides are almost without exception unsmiling, as if weather beaten by their own storm of noise and light. Churn 'em through, pocket the cash, get 'em off...and repeat... taking advantage of moments of 'peace' while the punters are on their rides to puff a cigarette or check mobiles.
This lad seemed oblivious, absorbed in checking Facebook or messages or whatever, while the big wheel whirled around, it's slowing a warning to work again.
This image made me think of a scene Guy Garvey of elbow might write a song lyric about. Maybe, one day.
