Gladiatorial Ring

Today I went on a U3A walk around the City of London; it was cold, wet and windy but worth every minute to end up in the capital’s oldest quarter and the only place where you can see Roman remains. 2,000 years ago, thousands gathered to watch wild animal fights, public executions and gladiatorial combats.

London’s Roman Amphitheatre was lost for centuries until the original walls were discovered by archaeologists in 1988. In the chambers of London Guildhall, we witnessed these ancient remains and our guide asked us to imagine the bloody events that once provided entertainment for the public.
