Modern Blantyre

Blantyre is an intriguing mix of old and new. There is incredible poverty and it is surrounded by districts that are little more than shanty towns. There are also many neighbourhoods with very modest housing and some areas of real affluence, especially on the margins of the city. I've been trying to capture the little vignettes of everyday life as I travel about. However, in order to give a representative view of the city it is important to recognise that it is the commercial capital of Malawi, therefore the head offices of many banks and multi-national companies are located here.
This impressive building, which we drive past every day, is the headquarters of the National Bank of Malawi.
