Nürnberg/Nuremberg: view south from Kaiserburg

Nuremberg is Bavaria's second largest city after Munich. The town centre was almost totally destroyed during World War II, but by 1966 most of the restoration work to it had been carried out.

Two unusually shaped churches figure in this photo. Both have late Gothic chancels which are broader and higher than the remaining original parts of the buildings. The nearer is the church of St Sebald, which dates from the mid 13th century. In the middle distance is the St Lawrence church, which was built a century and a half later. Both are well worth an extensive visit, and feature breathtaking sculptures by Veit Stoss. (More of Veit Stoss's works can be found in Krakow, Poland.)

There is plenty more to see and do in the town. A fascinating place, it is the home of Albrecht Dürer, the Nuremberg sausage, and gingerbread - all of which are well worth trying.


This photo was taken in March 1966, I have no record of its precise date and have thus had to make a guess.
