Pillar Box, England
The British pillar post was first designed in 1852, twelve years after the introduction of the uniform penny post by Sir Rowland Hill.
The idea of having boxes in the street for letter collection came from Hill's surveyor, who later went on to be a famous novelist - Anthony Trollope.
This is one of the boxes made in celebration of Victoria's Jubilee in 1887. Boxes like this still exist in many of the countries of the former British Empire.
