The Holy Island of Lindisfarne

When a friend heard we were coming on holiday to Northumberland, she asked if we were going to visit Holy Island, "a special place".
There are many reasons for this:
- the need to check tide tables to make sure when it's safe to cross over the causeway to get there (and back again)
- a spiritual feel to the island, started off by Saints Aidan and Cuthbert, back in the 7th century
- the 17th century castle, built as a fort but turned into a family home by designer Edward Lutyens in the early 1900s (with a garden by Gertrude Jekyll)
- the wildlife (today sky larks sang everywhere and gannets skimmed across the waves).
A special place indeed.
