St Lawrence's Church, West Wycombe

Tony and I were here for a concert this evening, as part of the Wycombe Arts Festival. The title of the concert was 'Handel and the Music of Gin Lane', performed by an ensemble called Sirinu. They played a selection of music from the 18th century, using the instruments of the period which included a hurdy gurdy, harpsichord, theorbo, dulcimer and baroque violin - strung with animal gut instead of metal strings, which gives it a much mellower sound. It was a wonderful concert, in an appropriately baroque setting as the church has some amazingly ornate frescoes and decoration inside.

The church has many interesting stories to tell, through the interlinking connections between the golden ball on top of it, the mausoleum just beside it, the nearby West Wycombe caves and the Dashwood family and their home at West Wycombe Park. All good subjects for another day's blipping.
