Spokes Ride East Lothian Collage
The first Sunday of the month and it is Spokes Ride day. Today we went to East Lothian.
It was much warmer and sunnier than forecast. Despite it being a Bank Holiday weekend, 10 people turned up. A fantastic morning riding as we headed east along the coast. The picture of the fishing vessel is from Port Seton. From here we cycled through Longniddry and Aberlady to Fenton Barns where we had a lovely lunch.
After lunch, we headed to Athelstaneford, birthplace of the Scottish flag, the oldest flag in Europe. It was here I took my picture of the Saltire. The flag is beside a monument to the battle between the Picts, aided by Scots, led by King Angus against a vast Saxon army led by Athelstan.
From here we headed past the Hopetoun monument. Just before one of the few climbs on the ride, I took the last picture which show the remains of Garlton Castle. The cottage on the left was converted from one of the remaining blocks of a three block castle.
From here, it was downhill to Longniddry, and then back along the coast, through Musselburgh, and home.
