May Sisters challenge; maybe

So - I’ve unwrapped the frame and inserted the forks and clamped them in place (see here for the beginning of this story). Maybe I’ll do a bit more. Or maybe not.

My Macbook shows a picture of the road up to Mont Ventoux (The Giant or Beast of Provence). Mont Ventoux is legendary in the history of the Tour de France. The summit is 6,273 feet (1,912m) above sea level. Not the highest mountain in the Tour, but certainly the hardest. The wind, the heat and the unrelenting barrenness of the terrain, can defeat the will of even the hardest man. I know; in July 2005, Anniemay and I made our attempt on The Beast.

En route we passed the memorial that commemorates the place where my boyhood hero, Tom Simpson, died in 1967 from a combination of heat exhaustion, drugs and lack of water. We stopped and paid our respects - the summit now clearly in sight. When we finally got to top, the wind was so fierce that we could hardly open the car door and get out for a wander round.

On the way back down we passed a young girl on a shopping bike and I thought ‘maybe I could do this’. Maybe I will one day - who knows. Got to finish building the bike first though. Maybe I’ll do that tomorrow.
