Through the arches
Today we went to Waihi Beach for breakfast followed by a walk by the beach. We then came back to Waihi and caught the special tourist train between Waihi and Waikino. Waikino is where I started school, coming by school bus from my father's farm at Waitekauri. It is also where the Victoria Battery once rescued the gold from the ore out of mines like the Martha mine in Waihi and the Golden Cross mine further up in the hills from Waitekauri.
The ruins of the Battery remain. The old cyanide tanks which stood atop this arched platform made of concrete have largely rusted away. Mr H was able to rescue a sliver of rusted iron from below one tank. The boys enjoyed walking around between and through the arches. I was able to capture Young L at one point.
I like it large.
On the train ride to Waikino I was able to get a moderately good photo of a Harrier Hawk, one of the two raptors we have here in New Zealand. With the two I captured yesterday, this brings to me 39 different bird species which I have photographed at least once this year. Pleased as I am with that, I prefer this thoughtful walk by a six year old.
