Mayflower
I just love the blossom on the gum trees, the blossoms are not petals but made up of 100's of stamens.
The blossom reminds me of the books "Snugglepot and Cuddlepie" (our youngest son's favourite story when he was little) written by (coincidentally) MAY Gibbs, her first book was published in 1918.
Here is a snippet of information about the author and the kiddies books
Cecilia May Gibbs MBE (17 January 1877 – 27 November 1969), publishing under the name May Gibbs, was an English Australian children's author, illustrator, and cartoonist. She is best known for her gumnut babies (also known as "bush babies" or "bush fairies") and the books Snugglepot and Cuddlepie.
May Gibbs based some of the characters and scenery on the plants found in the bushland of Bunbury, Western Australia, where she played as a child.
Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, the gumnut babies, are the main characters of the story and are modelled on the appearance of young Eucalyptus (gum tree) nuts.
The female gumnut babies, however, have their hair, hats and skirts modelled on Eucalyptus flowers.
A Banksia man, from May Gibbs' Snugglepot and Cuddlepie
The "big bad" Banksia Men are the villains of the story and are modelled on the appearance of aged Banksia "cones", with follicles for eyes and other facial features.
