Feel the Pain.
The weather was wet this morning ,so we did a food shop in Sainsbury's. We came home, put the shopping away, and then as the weather had cleared up, decided to drive to Penarth. It was relatively quiet, and while J went onto the pier i went into the Pavilion. There was an exhibition of paintings ,which really didn't do anything at all for me. I decided to take some photos and was happily clicking away when a youngish guy came up behind me. I thought i had better ask if it was alright to take photos, and he said, as long as you mention my name wherever you put the pictures. It was an exhibition by Anthony Rhys: Born of Pain & Iron. Anthony replaces the plain, staid expressions of the Victorian era with pure emotion. The people scream, shout ,cry and crumble under the weight of their own lives and the pressures of living in an often brutal society.
Described as mesmerizing, brutal, harrowing and poignant the works, all beautifully mounted on gold edged card and velvet, are firmly placed in Welsh history and landscape and often tell the story of the outsider and the excluded in Victorian Wales. The subjects range from workhouse and asylum inmates , orphaned children, wayward women and the old and infirm.
While i was taking my photos the artist, Anthony said, You have reminded me to take some photos for myself, and i said , its a good job i came in then. He was a nice guy but i certainly wouldn't want to hang any of his paintings on my wall.
