Early or late?
This attractive plant has been in flower at Arduaine for several weeks already, and yet it normally blooms in late summer! The question is, is it flowering very late, or very early? Schizostylis coccinea, is a rhizomatous plant from damp places in South Africa, and after spending years trying to remember how to spell it, I now find that it's become Hesperantha coccinea! Apparently botanists have been convinced of its new allegiance since 1996 - first I've heard of it! At least it will be easier to spell and to pronounce! No more argument as to whether it should be Skitso or Shitso!
The common name is Kaffir Lily, which has long been considered politically incorrect, so as well as having a recently changed botanical name we should be prepared to find it at the garden centre under a new common name too, when the trade has come to a decision! Confusion all round for what is an attractive late-flowering perennial.
