Portobello Potteries

These are the kiln chimneys at the foot of Pipe Street. They are no longer in use, of course.
In 1968 (or so) I decorated the pottery being made there with various bluebells and thistles. We sat three or four at tables, listened to Radio 4 plays and generally had good fun and blethers as we painted away. I lived in Pipe Street and so had a very short travelling distance. On our way out of the Pottery we would have a quick look for 'Seconds' which were in a huge pile and mostly broken up but sometimes some good in-tact pieces. I took a lot of these to Bristol to my family when I visited them.
And now it's all gone, moved to Crieff.

Anyway, today I sauntered around Porty and then caught the bus back in to town.
THIS NEXT PART OF MY STORY YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BELIEVE!!!

At the last bust stop of Portobello High Street the bus was slowed in traffic and we were in step with..........wait for it...........a youngish girl pushing a baby in a pushchair and a toddler at her side and the girl had only a cardigan on. Yes, that's right. Only a cardigan which did not cover her bum and the rest of her was stark naked except high heeled sandals.
I had to take two, and three and four or more. Could I believe my eyes?
I thought, oh, her skirt must be hitched up!
I thought, oh, she's forgotten to put on trousers; leggings; tights;-- no wait a minute, she's more importantly forgotten to put on her knickers.
If it wasn't for the lads sitting behind me who were also witnessing this spectacle (and you may guess their comments and laughter) then I may have believed myself to be hallucinating (though please Lord if I were to ever hallucinate then let it be something more poetic than this).
I looked back at her as we eventually passed and was going to point out her predicament in sign language through the bus window but she was busy with a phone and smiling away quite happily.
I like to think there was an innocent explanation and that she was perhaps totally unaware.
