Misty Mayhem

Although it was reasonably clear on our stretch of the coast by the time we reached Barns Ness Lighthouse this morning the haar ( sea mist ) was truly upon us. My wife went off on her own with the dogs as my hip was playing up and I spent some time trying to take a reasonable image in the mist. Unfortunately haar is not like low lying mist inland, you are either in it or out of it and you don’t get those nice little fluffy clouds of mist which can enhance early morning landscape photography. So trying to take a photo in haar is a bit like trying to see through a heavy grey filter. I tried various exposures but found in processing it is probably better to underexpose as it is easier to rescue detail out of your underexposed foreground than to try and get some detail back into an over0-exposed sky. Of course. a white painted lighthouse in not the easiest building to seek out in the mist as its whiteness means it disappears totally into the mist too readily. The shot I have chosen was taken towards the end of my time there when the mist was beginning to lift and there was a hint of blue in the misty sky.
