Hard at Work
This is a little snapshot of our teaching day. We had put the teachers into small groups to work on an activity. Although chairs are available, this group chose to work on the stone floor. When children go to school in Malawi it is very likely that the younger classes will learn outside under a tree. The older kids may be lucky enough to learn in a classroom block, but it most probably won't have desks and chairs. The children sit in rows on the stone or concrete floor. Old habits die hard so we find that often the teachers we work with opt to work in groups on the floor. I don't think we would find many UK teachers at an in- service event happy to sit on an in carpeted floor for any length of time!
The colourful bundle in the picture is actually a 5 week old baby belonging to the female teacher on the right in the group!
