Clocktower

The imposing clock tower stands above the entrance to the old Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. When the Royal Infirmary which was built to replace the former hospital was opened on a large “clean air site” in 1879 it was described as "probably the best planned hospital" in the whole of Britain. The design was largely influenced by Florence Nightingale’s recommendations and designed in a Scottish Baronial style. In 1903 it was the largest hospital under one roof in the world.

Since the final patients moved out in 2003 to a new one further south much of the hospital has been demolished but fortunately part of the main area has been retained and has been converted for residential and commercial use.
