Proud parents

Phil, our school caretaker, texted me early this morning to announce the new arrivals! 5 out of 6 eggs have hatched and have provided an absolutely fascinating diversion from SATs revision all day.
Although visually indistinguishable, mum and dad behave quite differently. Mum still sits on them for brief periods and pokes around them, prods the nest and does most of the feeding. Dad brings food in, which he usually passes to her for ramming down throats. Unless she just eats it herself! If he happens to come back when she's out, he tweets loudly, looks panicky and just stuffs it down the first beak to raise its head. Both parents wait for a few seconds after feeding while the tiny chick turns bottom up and offers a faecal sack. This is either removed or eaten! The kids think that's gross, of course.
