Richardson's Smokehouse, Orford

This place fascinated us on our visit 6 years ago and little has changed since then except more layers of tar have been smoked onto the door and surrounding walls. There was a wonderful smell of woodsmoke around here, pretty much anything that could be smoked was. Last time we bought kippers so we did so again for tomorrow's lunch.

After another nice breakfast of smoked haddock with poached eggs we travelled to Orford for a pre Sunday dinner stroll. Started at Orford Quay which was alive with children crabbing and parents watching on. Then walked up to the village centre to look at the smokery, houses and Orford Keep.

Then it was back to the hotel in Saxmundham for Sunday Lunch. Again I think I must have made the right choice with the slow roasted pork shoulder. Suffolk is renown for its pork. It was one of the best Sunday lunches I've ever eaten. The others had beef, which was local too, Red Poll but they reported it was a bit stringy in places. Plenty of vegetables too - green beans, swede, carrots, parsnips, caulifower and red cabbage as well as roast and mashed potatoes.

After that lot we didn't relish the 2 hour drive home so stopped at Woodbridge for a further stroll to shake down the lunch. Woodbridge is a lovely place too, on the banks of the River Deben. Lots of super boats and a tidal mill too. Very pretty, especially in the late adternoon sun. A duck also laid on her 9 ducklings for our entertainment.

A good drive home saw us back in Maidstone by 7.30pm.

An idea came to me for a book - my journey in search of the perfect scone. To go with my book on Catching the best Fish and Chips. Remember, you read about it here first. (Just like you read about my ambition to draw a map showing our journey around the Kent Coast.
