Royal visitors to Guildford's medieval castle
This sundial is set high on the wall of a small shopping arcade opposite Guildford castle. The sundial is flanked by the figures of Edward 1 and Queen Eleanor of Castille. Sets of rooms were created in the castle for the visitors, by Edward's father Henry 111. By the 14th century the castle fell into disrepair and only a keep remains today.
Interesting how plans are made and have to be revised, for the better in this case I think. I had intended to take a photograph of the castle keep. When I arrived it was covered in scaffolding and started to rain. Hey ho....... a quick look around and the sundial became the Blip for the day...
