record store day
I know, it was last weekend. But it reminded me to get the turntable out of the cupboard and hook it up. As luck would have it +1/2 was out at her book group so I could do a bit of sneaky re-arranging and present a fait accompli.
While rooting about at the back of the cupboard I dug out some classic records, mainly from the 80s and 90s. Pretenders, Deacon Blue, Hipsway. How old do I feel now?
I heard an interesting program on R2 some time ago, late at night, an interview with Ricky Ross about the making of Raintown. It reminded me to dig it out and take a listen again.
The turntable itself is a bit of 70's history: Thorens TD160 on very long term loan from my father in law. All original, in dire need of a good service but still sounding good. That finger lift needs straightening...
Anyway. One of the albums dug out contains one of the finest, happy, jangly pop songs you're ever likely to come across. From about '89, pretty obscure (so much so it's hard to find any information even with the might power of google), clear influences from the likes of Prefab Sprout but somehow timeless. Take a listen.
Quiet day: collected +1/3 from his scout camp, dropped him into a vat of sheep dip.
