Rainy Saturday in Rome
Roma Day 2
The hotel we stayed in is just above the Trastevere area of Rome, situated on the Gianicolo Hill, which has great views of the Rome skyline. It's a short walk into Trastevere, which has a fabulous Piazza with a fountain in the middle with an old church, Santa Maria in Trastevere, which the Piazza takes it's name from.
The plan today was to walk to the Campo de Fiori which has a flower and food market, then head over to the Pantheon, which we did. The rain started so the Pantheon got pretty mobbed, so we headed over to the restaurant across the road from it and sat under cover outdoors (next to the heater). Another bonus of sitting there was the young George Clooney look-a-like that was enticing people in to sit and eat there :-)
The rain brings it's own delights for photography - brightly coloured brollies were up, and we were in a prime position under cover to snap away at everything going on in front of us.
Met up with the Romans again, and we headed out to a proper non-touristy restaurant for a meal later. I found a wine that I very much enjoyed, a nice sweet fizzy lambrusco which the empty bottle was brought back with us to try and source it here in the UK. The drive back to the hotel later was pretty spectacular with torrential rain and thunder and lightening bringing flash flooding - although the crazy Italians barely slowed down....
Busy day - collapsed into bed shattered.
