In Central Park New York
A place called Bethesda. A beautiful flagged square with stone
seating surrounding a fountain. As I approached under a camellia
heavy with pink blossom the sounds of the plucking of the strings
of a harp were faintly audible. A little closer but still beyond visibility
and the tune was now perfectly clear - Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring
by J S Bach. On overtopping the hill, the source came into view.
There could hardly have been a tune which could have better
complemented the scene.
It was no surprise that the basket at her feet was almost full with
financial appreciation. Recordings were on sale and she would
play excerpts from the contents of each for anyone uncertain of
which they preferred. Her home was in Brooklyn. I commented
how lucky she was to be able to make a living out of doors in such
a place. She smiled and said " I have never wanted any other".
