Roberts Bank Superport
Seen from the ferry from Tsawwassen B.C, to the Gulf Islands, I liked the “mountain peaks” of the huge cranes in Deltaport facility that load the world’s biggest container ships against the real mountains near Vancouver in the background. Roberts Bank superport is a twin terminal on a spit of land 500 meters from the US border, just north of the ferry terminal. Westshore terminals, the single busiest coal export terminal in North America is the outer terminal. Recently it was been exporting more and more US coal also (most heading for Asia), partly because of the HUGE controversy that has (so far) blocked more coal export terminals in Washington and Oregon. The environmental, global warming and heath impacts, from burning it into the atmosphere or transporting it by train down the coast are enormous - am not going to begin to write it all here but here are a few references, including this one that has a fine aerial photograph of the extent of this super port and the ferry terminal. You almost have to look at it large to see the piles of coal etc…….
Canada and Coal
more about exporting from the West coast...
It was a surprisingly beautiful day.. we left late (time for a morning row with my friend J) in order to do some shopping in Canada before the evening ferry. Still a hastle with traffic and a time schedule. But no issues with bringing things over the border. It’s delightful to be able to get here before dark this time of year! Many trips hauling our stuff and we were ready for bed .. took the new memory foam mattress topper we bought at Costco out of the box, thinking we’d stick it on the bed and climb in. HA! little did we know It takes hours if not days to uncompress, so we had put it elsewhere and remake the bed. Too late for me to look at photos.
