Camassia Bulbs

This is a group of Camassia Leichtlinii Caerula in our garden. They are one of my favourite bulbs and are a big wow with their spears of blue pushing up about 60cm between the perennial foliage this time of year. There is also a beautiful cream version which flower a couple of weeks later.

Today's gardening lesson.....

Like all bulbs, the foliage should be left to die back for 6 weeks after they have flowered. This is because, the process of photosynthesis ie taking sunlight via the leaves is storing the energy and making the flower for NEXT year, this year. So never cut off or tie up foliage on any bulbs, until 6 weeks after they have flowers.

They should be planted in late Autumn. They are a chunky size bulb, and I plant them individually, since in the space of 2-3years they really bulk up. Put them on your shopping list! No garden should be without them.
