Cut flower garden

The cut flower garden is hidden away at Montacute House between an Elizabethan yew hedge and the tea rooms. The large house was completed in 1601, home to the Phelips family. In 1915 Lord Curzon rented it for a while before it was valued for scrap for the sum of £5,882 in 1931!

D and I arrived early in the morning to miss the Easter crowds. By lunch time families were picnicking in the grounds and really enjoying themselves, it reminded me of a beach scene, playing ball, sunbathing, sitting in groups, and swinging under the boughs of the large trees in the parkland, it was great watching them. The house itself is lovely to walk round but there is not that much of interest in the way of furniture and fittings. On the top floor is the portrait gallery of many early kings and people of note borrowed from the National Portrait Gallery. The gardens are a joy and the ice-house tucked away on the edge of a field is interesting. Good morning out.
