St George's Day at the Grenadier
My Belgravia tour finishes at this pub - allegedly London's most haunted. I was there today checking a few things out in preparation for Sunday.
It's tucked away in a mews, like most of the pubs in this area. It was originally built in the 1720s for the First Royal Regiment of Footguards. Famously known as the Duke of Wellington's Officers' mess; the first Beef Wellington may have been served here.
It is called the Grenadier in memory of a young Grenadier guard who was caught cheating at a game of cards and as a punishment was beaten so severely by his comrades that he died. Supernatural occurrences have been reported, particularly in September which is said to be the month in which he died. So we should be safe on Sunday...
