Grizedale Tarn

After watching Rory Stewart's programme on the history of the borders, we decided to walk to Grizedale Tarn where the last King of Cumberland, Dunmail, asked for his crown to be thrown into the depths after he was killed by combined Anglo-Saxon and Scottish forces. It was said that whoever wore the crown gained the legitimacy to rule Cumberland and so when Dunmail knew he would be defeated he entrusted his closest soldiers to cast it into the tarn, telling them he would return again when needed. Every year the spirit of these men retrieve the crown and carry it to their King's burial place to ask if it is yet time for him to rise again and every year he tells them no, not yet my friends.

I had a peek in but I couldn't see it!
