North Abington Railroad Depot.
This fine railway station was built in 1894. It serves as a restaurant now although the railway line is still active and is across the street from the building which houses my woodworking shop. A closer examination today revealed that the building is constructed of carefully cut granite and red sandstone blocks. The original windows are of leaded stained glass. In fact, the fan window over the front door has adorable little locomotives etched into the glass! From the research I did for this Blip, I learn that in 1893 there was a dispute between the town of Abington and the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad over the town's right to have it's streetcar system use land belonging to the railway company. It turned ugly, ended up in court and the judge ruled in favor of the town. As some compensation to Abington, the NYNH&HRR built this lovelier-than-usual depot. There's always a story.
