Goldfinch

Today's the day ............................... for a liquid twitter

That's how the song of a goldfinch is described in my bird book - and it's actually very accurate.

For such a little bird, goldfinches pack a big punch. They are strikingly beautiful examples of the finch family with their scarlet faces set in a black and white head. In fact they look almost tropical in appearance as if they should be in warmer climes. They have a very distinctive flight too - as the book says - undulating and dancing - and while they're flying, they're usually doing the liquid twitter at the same time.

They're one of my favourite birds and they're easy to spot perched on the telegraph wire behind our house ...........................
