CannyScot's Day

Falkland Palace

Another glorious day for Easter Monday.

A visit with family to Falklands Palace in Fife. The Palace was built by two kings - James IV and V – between 1450 and 1541. The Stuart Kings and Queens liked to visit here – including Mary Queen of Scots who probably played tennis in the grounds. (It has the oldest tennis court in Britain.). However, during Oliver Cromwell's time, he stationed troops in the Palace but much of it was burned after his troops left.

Some restoration work was undertaken in the late 18th Century by the 3rd Marquess of Bute, in Victorian times, but Falkland Palace remains an atmospheric and lovely Renaissance building.

The Gardens of the Palace are beautiful and if you would like to see photos of the Palace, Grounds and surrounding buildings head over to my Flikr set.
