Location: The Severn Valley Railway (SVR), approaching Bewdley station. The SVR runs from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth, and was (in the 1960s) a victim of the “Beeching Axe”. Now restored by, and run by, volunteers it is one of the major attractions of this part of central England. The theme is 1940s/50s, and the stations/platforms along the route are ‘furnished’ with banks of old leather suitcases, stacks of milk churns, posters extolling the virtues of travel such as “Skegness is so bracing” from the ‘50s, and a generally retro decor.
The gentleman in the foreground of the photo was waiting to collect that ‘loop’ (whatever it is!) from the footplate crew ‘en-passant’. He had just hopped out from an adjacent signal box to perform this role.
