All the surviving A4s

We went to Shildon Railway Museum to see the visiting A4 locos —my favourite type of steam engine. This is a picture of the Mallard, which is perhaps the most famous due to its record breaking run between London and Edinburgh when it reached 125.88 mph and broke the world speed record for a steam locomotive.

Also present were the Sir Nigel Gresley (named after the main who designed these engines and which usually operates on the North York Moors line), the Brittern, the Union of South Africa, Dwight D Eisenhower and the Dominion of Canada. The last two having crossed the Atlantic to attend this great gathering and to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Mallard achieving the world speed record!
