Waterpipe, Norwich, England
Built on the remains of the Roman town Venta Icenorum, Norwich was the second largest city in England for hundreds of years creating jobs, prosperity and intellectual debate.
By the 1790s, the City's huge wool trade was suffering massive competition from other parts of England, and exports to the Continent were severely hit by England going to war with France in 1793.
Whereas Norwich did expand in Victorian times, it was nothing like the scale of growth of the Northern manufacturing towns, giving it the many aesthetic streets and architecture you see today.
